Natural Rights and Civil Rights

Paine distinguishes natural rights (inherent to humans as such) from civil rights (which derive from natural rights but require society to secure). Civil rights are natural rights exchanged for collective protection.

Paine defines natural rights as those appertaining to man in right of his existence, and civil rights as those that belong to man in right of his being a member of society.
